UPDATE: Perfect secret weapon for Baker Mayfield just fell right into the Buccaneers’ lap.TS.THANHDUNG

On Friday the Dolphins decided to release Odell Beckham Jr., which means he’ll be able to join a playoff contender and perhaps help a team in a pinch at wide receiver.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a chance to reunite Odell Beckham Jr. and Baker Mayfield after the former was released.

For example, a team like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There are some pretty apparent and obvious downsides to the Bucs taking a flier on Beckham, but even as narrow as the upside is it’s still too good to not consider. After losing Chris Godwin for the season to a dislocated ankle, Tampa Bay has pushed to the edge as far as wide receiver depth. Mike Evans missed three games, Sterling Shepard has a foot injury, and Kam Johnson was just this week designated to return from IR.

Depth has been a struggle all over the roster for the Bucs as the team is simply running out of bodies at the worst possible time. With just four games left, Tampa Bay has control of the NFC South and a playoff spot but it’s not yet a firm grasp. Looking further down the road, the Bucs need to find a way to make sure they’re competitive in the playoffs, and adding a potential threat like OBJ could be a way to do that.

Buccaneers could be a sneaky perfect landing spot for Odell Beckham Jr.

He would likely fill the role that Shepard has been in, which creates a nice problem for Liam Coen to have. Shepard would be aligned with Trey Palmer when it comes to playing time and neither would likely be far behind Beckham on the depth chart.

Coen not only has another potential threat at his disposal but can also find ways to use his receivers’ motion against the defense. Imagine a play design where Evans and Beckham are lined up alongside Jalen McMillan and Rachaad White; motioning Beckham and White around could take defenders off McMillan and Evans and free up some easy passing lanes.

We’re also forgetting Cade Otton’s role in this, as well as Bucky Irving in the backfield. Nobody would be expecting Prime OBJ, but using his aura against the other pieces on offense could work out devilishly well.

Lest we forget that this would be a reunion between Beckham and Baker, something that would be akin to when the latter arrived in Tampa. You can see the trolls now, but look at how well it worked out for Mayfield in terms of redeeming himself after his time with the Browns came to a disappointing end.

Sound familiar? If Baker could use a stint with the Bucs to bounce back, why can’t Beckham also find redemption?

Of course, therein lies that challenge. Beckham has spent time with the Ravens and Dolphins after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams and neither stay went well. He’s past his prime but is looking for opportunities closer to what he used to get which seems to suggest he’s unaware of his decreased value.

That might lead him to another team, but so too could the fact that he doesn’t have full control over where he goes. Beckham is on waivers until Monday which means a team can claim him and his affordable contract.

It’s a long shot, especially since the Bucs don’t typically make big in-season moves, but it makes a lot of sense to at least consider. Tampa Bay is right back in the thick of the playoff race and it would behoove all involved to be as serious about contending as possible.
