UPDATE: Two Cowboys head coaching candidates stand out and are hotly contested for the prestigious job of…

The NFL had some really bad teams this season, but the Dallas Cowboys are a special kind of unserious. There are countless examples that support that statement, but their head coaching search is all the evidence you need.

Seemingly overnight, Brian Schottenheimer emerged as a serious candidate. No other team in need of a head coach or offensive coordinator has showed an ounce of interest in Schottenheimer.

2 Cowboys head coach candidates emerge as clear favorites for the job

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have let both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, the two most coveted candidates in this coaching pool, take other jobs without having a single discussion with either about their own HC opening. That is malpractice of the highest order and proves Jerry Jones cares more about maintaining control of the franchise than winning.

In addition to Johnson and Glenn, Dallas might be on the verge of letting Robert Saleh, who interviewed with the team last week, take the Jaguars job after Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen withdrew from the running.

It’s anyone’s guess where the search goes next but a new report from Cowboys writer Patrik Walker leaves two clear front-runners.

According to Walker, the Cowboys currently are not planning to set or request interviews for additional head coaching candidates. While that could change, it’s also likely they have seen enough from their current list of candidates and are mulling a decision.

Other candidates have been floated in recent days, including Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. While Kingsbury was previously a head coach and has vast experience as a play-caller, does not have the familiarity with the Cowboys organization.

Regardless, if Dallas does not set any further interviews that leaves Schottenheimer and Kellen Moore as the clear front-runners.

Despite the growing Schottenheimer buzz, we still believe Kellen Moore is firmly in the mix. The Cowboys just can’t bring in Moore for a second interview because the Eagles are still playing. They would do well to not panic hire Schottenheimer in the meantime.

Unfortunately, Dallas may be working on a deadline being that the East-West Shrine Bowl will be played at AT&T Stadium next Thursday. It is imperative that the Cowboys get aligned on what players they should be scouting. That is obviously hard to do without a head coach.

While Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier have also interviewed, Schottenheimer and Moore have comfortably received the most buzz of the foursome. The Deion Sanders fuss has simmered significantly over the past week.

Anything is possible with this franchise, but it’s shaping up to be a two-horse race between Moore and Schottenheimer.

Choose your fighter, Cowboys fans.
