Vikings Eyeing Major McCarthy Trade as Darnold Rumors Heat Up.D

Once considered a stopgap option for the Minnesota Vikings, Sam Darnold’s surprising success has raised some serious questions about the future of J.J. McCarthy with the team. Darnold, who was initially seen as a temporary solution, has silenced critics and proven his worth this season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns with a 14-2 record, one game remaining in the regular season. His resurgence has led many to speculate that McCarthy, who was drafted 10th overall by the Vikings in April, could be on the trade block come the offseason.

Sam Darnold takes high road when asked if Jets failed him as a young QB

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made a bold statement back in August, calling McCarthy the team’s “young, franchise quarterback.” However, Darnold’s performance has led to speculation that McCarthy may no longer be seen as an irreplaceable part of the future. ESPN’s Adam Schefter weighed in on the situation, pointing out that in a quarterback draft class that lacks high-ceiling prospects, teams in need of a quarterback will likely inquire about McCarthy’s availability. Schefter noted that teams are aware of the Vikings’ lack of draft capital, with only three picks in the 2025 draft, and suggested that McCarthy could be traded for valuable assets, potentially including a first-round pick. This would be a significant win for the Vikings, especially considering McCarthy was seen as a top-tier quarterback prospect heading into the draft.

While McCarthy’s knee surgery has been cited as a factor in his trade value, Schefter remains confident that the Vikings could recoup everything they invested in him and more if they decide to part ways. McCarthy’s potential has not gone unnoticed around the NFL, and his trade value could be higher than many expect. The Vikings are in a position where additional draft picks could bolster their already strong roster, especially with Darnold performing at a high level.

The shift in tone regarding Darnold’s future with the team has been notable. Early in the season, it seemed inevitable that the Vikings would move on from him after the 2024 campaign. Darnold had been brought in on a one-year, $10 million deal, and expectations were that he would serve as a bridge quarterback for the franchise’s future. However, reports in late December, including from The Athletic’s Diana Russini, suggested that the Vikings are now considering bringing Darnold back for the 2025 season. This represents a significant change in direction for the team, as they had originally signed him with the understanding that he would only be a short-term option.

Vikings have to be kicking themselves for letting J.J. McCarthy replacement go

Still, it is unclear whether the Vikings would be willing to meet Darnold’s potential demands for a larger contract. Matching a lucrative offer could impede the team’s ability to address other roster needs, especially with 27 players heading toward free agency in the near future. Yet, as the Vikings are on the brink of securing a playoff spot and potentially locking down the No. 1 seed in the NFC, they are faced with the dilemma of deciding whether to extend Darnold and make him a long-term part of the team’s future.

Through all the speculation and shifting narratives, one thing remains constant: Kevin O’Connell’s loyalty to J.J. McCarthy. Despite the rise of Darnold and the uncertainty surrounding McCarthy’s future with the team, O’Connell has steadfastly supported the young quarterback. Throughout McCarthy’s time with the Vikings, O’Connell has been a driving force behind his development, dubbing himself the “quarterback killer” due to his thorough and often decisive evaluations of quarterbacks. O’Connell’s belief in McCarthy has been unwavering, even as Darnold has thrived, and it was O’Connell who made the final decision to trade up and select McCarthy 10th overall in the draft.

O’Connell’s confidence in McCarthy is clear. In a press conference on December 30, O’Connell spoke with pride about McCarthy’s progress, highlighting how the young quarterback had made significant strides during his first NFL offseason. “I feel so fortunate to have J.J. back full speed in those meetings,” O’Connell said. “You walk in and you’ve got five NFL quarterbacks sitting there.” This continued endorsement from O’Connell suggests that McCarthy remains a central part of the team’s plans moving forward, despite the growing buzz surrounding Darnold’s future.

J.J. McCarthy reacts to Sam Darnold creating NFL history with Vikings amid trade rumors

With the Vikings’ current success and Darnold’s unexpected resurgence, the future of McCarthy remains uncertain. O’Connell’s support for McCarthy and the team’s potential trade interest in him could lead to a dramatic offseason for the franchise. If the Vikings choose to trade McCarthy, it could be one of the most high-profile moves of the offseason, reshaping the team’s quarterback landscape for years to come. For now, however, the Vikings are focused on their playoff push, while McCarthy’s future hangs in the balance, subject to the shifting tides of both internal and external evaluations.
