Vikings Insider reveals when Minnesota’s QB2 search could end in 2025..ANHTRUC.

As the Minnesota Vikings attempt to drift further and further away from any rumors connecting them to Aaron Rodgers during the last few weeks, many have wondered why the team still hasn’t signed a veteran quarterback this year to be the team’s No. 2 option behind J.J. McCarthy next season.

Well, on Friday, the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling shared in the latest edition of his Access Vikings newsletter that the Vikings could potentially be waiting for a specific date to pass before adding a free-agent signal-caller to their roster this offseason.

“[Due to the compensatory pick formula], the Vikings will [likely] be selective with their free agent additions at least until 3 p.m. on April 28. After that deadline, free agents no longer count in the comp pick formula for the 2026 draft, meaning the Vikings can sign a veteran quarterback without risk of losing draft capital next year.”

Pool of free-agent QBs for the Minnesota Vikings to choose from continues to shrink

As each day passes, it seems like another free-agent quarterback lands with a team that isn’t named the Vikings.

On Thursday, former Minnesota passer Case Keenum signed a deal with the Chicago Bears, and then on Friday, former San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.

These are two of the guys that some Vikings fans thought their favorite team should consider adding this offseason. But now, they are just one of the many free-agent signal-callers that Minnesota has passed over in the last few weeks, including Jameis Winston, Mac Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew, and Taylor Heinicke.

Pickings are really beginning to become slim for the Vikings, but there are still some notable free-agent quarterbacks left for the team to add this offseason, like Joe Flacco, Ryan Tannehill, Carson Wentz, and Drew Lock.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like Minnesota fans are going to have to wait much longer for the team to add a new passer to its roster.
