One of the biggest stories throughout the offseason for the Minnesota Vikings was what they were going to do at the quarterback position.

They have J.J. McCarthy ready to take over as the starter, but they still flirted with signing Aaron Rodgers. That never came to fruition, but the backup quarterback spot was always one that stood out as a position that needed to be filled.

Ultimately, the Vikings got their guy in Sam Howell on day three of the NFL Draft, but it took some time to get there.

Daniel Jones took less money from Indianapolis

When the Vikings brought in Daniel Jones last year from the New York Giants, the idea was to bring him in, get him comfortable, and have him as the future backup quarterback. Ultimately, that didn’t happen, as he chose to sign with the Indianapolis Colts.

The reporting at the time was that the contracts were for similar money, but Tom Pelissero sang a different tone on a recent appearance on The Ross Tucker Podcast, saying that he took less guaranteed money from the Colts.

“It sounded like the Vikings thought Jones was coming back, but then they just got the sense right at the end, he was really not convicted about coming back to Minnesota, ended up taking a little bit less in terms of guaranteed money from the Colts to end up in Indianapolis.”

The verbiage from Pelissero is very interesting. Using the word “convicted” with his decision is a fascinating one. It speaks volumes about how the Vikings feel about McCarthy and that they believe in him now and in the future.

It also says something about the situation in Indianapolis with Anthony Richardson. Jones likely believes that he will get a better chance to play with the Colts than he would in Minnesota.

If Jones took less in guarantees to have a better path to the field, who can blame him? It also should instill even more confidence in the fanbase with what they have in McCarthy.
