Vikings get major news that could impact how they attack the secondary this offseason – FB88

It has been a wild ride for the Minnesota Vikings when it comes to the secondary. They have spent a lot of resources in that group with varying levels of success.

They have tried multiple ways to address the position. In 2022, they spend first, second, and fourth round picks to bolster both corner back and safety. All three are off the team.

The next two years, the Vikings drafted prospect at the 102nd and 108th overall and neither played in 2024 with Khyree Jackson tragically passing away in a tragic car accident.

The other player from the last two draft classes that didn’t play is cornerback Mekhi Blackmon. He was selected at 102nd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft and played well ans extensively as a rookie.

Unfortunately, he tore his ACL on the first day of training camp practice and missed the rest of the season. Luckily for the Vikings, he will be ready for the entire offseason.

SKOR North’s Darren Wolfson reported that Blackmon has been cleared for all activities.

It’s a really good thing for the Vikings, as they hoped Blackmon would be a starter for them last season. His ability to play both outside cornerback and in the slot is a huge asset for him.

Being that he’s cleared from the injury, it means that Blackmon will likely be a heavy, if not full, participant in the offseason program. That can help him get a leg up to potentially win one of the starting cornerback jobs in 2025 especially with the Vikings likely adding another 2-4 cornerbacks that weren’t on the team last year.

The Vikings getting Blackmon back could be a huge factor in them taking a positive step forward, especially with his ability to thrive both inside and outside. It also provides a little bit of insurance to ease their dire need to address the secondary this offseason.
