Minnesota Vikings fans have been buzzing with questions about the quarterback conundrum that awaits the team in the 2025 NFL season. With an eye on adding depth to their QB roster, the pressing question is: how will this shake up their quarterback hierarchy?

Enter J.J. McCarthy, the young talent who has yet to take an NFL regular-season snap.

You’re right if you think it’s a bold move by the Vikings to possibly slot McCarthy in as the starter. Experience is something he’ll need to garner eventually, and while some fans are chomping at the bit for a more seasoned leader, investing in youth could pay off big.

For a team that’s coming off a stellar 14-win season, the appeal of prepping a quarterback for a championship push is obvious.

Yet, the intrigue doesn’t stop there. The Vikings’ QB2 battle might be less of a mystery than you think.

Rumors are swirling that Brett Rypien could step up as McCarthy’s primary backup. Rypien, poised to enter his sixth year in the league, boasts limited starting experience—four starts to be precise, split between the Broncos and the Rams in 2023.

While Rypien’s career stats aren’t exactly jaw-dropping—four touchdowns against nine interceptions and a 58.3% completion rate over 950 yards—the decision to sign him to a one-year, $1.195 million extension underscores Minnesota’s commitment to continuity. Going with Rypien may not wow you, but it makes economic sense for a team with an eye on the salary cap.

Mentions of big names like Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins have floated around as possible additions to the Vikings’ quarterback room. However, the reality is those stars don’t fit the bill of a budget-friendly backup willing to mentor without breaking the bank.

So while this setup with McCarthy leading and Rypien providing backup support seems risky to some, don’t be surprised if it’s the course the Vikings decide to chart. With no hurry to sign a veteran, this might be exactly the game plan Minnesota has in mind. Stay tuned, Vikings fans—whatever happens, the 2025 season promises to be an interesting ride.
