Why Joe Tryon-Shoyinka May Be Leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025

In a recent interview at the 2025 NFL Combine, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles made some telling remarks about outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (JTS). Bowles acknowledged that while JTS performed adequately in run defense and coverage, he fell short in consistently pressuring the quarterback. Bowles stated, “I think Joe did everything right for us except get to the quarterback on a consistent basis.”

This commentary raises significant concerns about JTS’s future with the team. With only two sacks in the previous season—one against the San Francisco 49ers and another in week one—his performance has not met expectations for a former first-round draft pick. Bowles emphasized the need for edge rushers to deliver double-digit sacks, a target JTS has not achieved.

Statistically, JTS’s run defense grade was 51.7, ranking him 168th among 211 edge defenders, while his pass rush grade was slightly better at 55.1, placing him 152nd. This discrepancy suggests that while he may have strengths in certain areas, his ability to disrupt the quarterback remains a critical weakness.

Given Bowles’s lack of enthusiasm in his assessment, it seems increasingly likely that the Buccaneers will seek to upgrade the edge rusher position. With JTS’s contract up and the team not picking up his fifth-year option, a change of scenery could be beneficial for both the player and the franchise.

As the Buccaneers look to enhance their defense, the future of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka appears uncertain. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds. What are your thoughts on JTS’s performance and potential departure? Share your opinions in the comments!
