Will Packers fire Matt LaFleur? Why Green Bay coach's seat is getting warmer after wild-card loss vs. Eagles image

It’s hard to see how a coach who just finished an 11-win season with a fifth playoff berth in the past six seasons would be on the hot seat. But that might be the case in Green Bay with Matt LaFleur.

The Packers suffered an early exit in the 2025 NFL playoffs, losing to the Eagles 22-10 in the wild-card round. What was a promising 2024 season turned sour with a 3-3 end to the regular season, paired with a one-and-done stay in the postseason.

Packers News: Matt LaFleur faces his biggest challenge against the Vikings - Acme Packing Company

While posting an 11-6 record is an impressive feat, Green Bay was putrid in division games, posting a 1-5 record against the NFC North. The Packers lost to the Lions and Vikings twice and fell to the Bears in Week 18, costing themselves the No. 6 seed and a more favorable playoff matchup.

The season as a whole may have been another positive for a youthful club led by second-year starter Jordan Love, but the way in which it ended undoubtedly leaves Packers fans underwhelmed heading into the offseason.

“It just goes back to show you the importance of getting these home-field games,” LaFleur said after the loss. “We have a really tough division, and I’m hoping our guys use that as fuel this offseason to dig a little deeper.”

Here’s what you need to know about LaFleur’s status.

Will Packers fire Matt LaFleur?

It does not appear as though LaFleur is on the hot seat — yet.

Fumble on opening kickoff, injuries and penalties cost the Packers in their loss to the Eagles

LaFleur signed a contract extension in 2022 to remain with the team and lead the Jordan Love era. Considering how young the Packers are, in most scenarios, a coach would not be close to being on the hot seat. Green Bay greatly surpassed expectations in 2023, and while the ending was disappointing in 2024, it was another step in the right direction.

However, LaFleur can’t be grouped in with the young core of the club. He’s been with Green Bay for six seasons, and considering some of his in-game decisions, a coach with his resume should be better than what he was producing. Whether that’s the clock management, use of his timeouts, or the pivotal decisions on fourth down, LaFleur made mistakes that are to be expected out of someone in their first or second year at the helm — not someone that has six seasons under his belt, including five playoff berths.

While the team has taken strides over the past two seasons, how LaFLeur has evolved as a coach is a potential concern going forward. He may not be the answer to lead Love and Co. in the future.

How long has Matt LaFleur coached the Packers?

LaFleur finished up his sixth season as head coach of the Packers. He was hired by Green Bay in January 2019 after spending one season as offensive coordinator of the Titans.

The Packers head coach recorded three consecutive seasons with 13 wins, but since then, he has just one season with double-digit victories, which happened this year (11 wins).
