Xavier McKinney Reflects on Tough Chapter in His NFL Career
Life in the NFL is tough, and sometimes it throws challenges that test both physical and mental limits. On Thursday, Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney took to social media to reflect on a particularly difficult moment from his career. In 2022, McKinney suffered a serious hand injury, breaking three fingers. While the injury was a significant setback, McKinney’s resilience has allowed him to bounce back and continue performing at an elite level over the past few seasons.
On Instagram, McKinney shared images of his hand and X-rays from the 2022 injury. Initially, there were concerns among Packers fans that this injury could have affected his recent performances, but McKinney assured them that it wasn’t a lingering issue.
Xavier McKinney’s Strong Impact on the Packers
Despite the injury setback, McKinney has made a remarkable impact on the Green Bay Packers since joining the team. His first season was nothing short of outstanding, earning him a Pro Bowl selection and a First-Team All-Pro honor. In 2023, McKinney finished the season with eight interceptions—more than he had accumulated in his previous four seasons combined. Additionally, he recorded a fumble recovery, 88 total tackles (including two for loss), a QB hit, and allowed a passer rating of just 78.5 when targeted.
What truly sets McKinney apart is his durability. During the regular season, he played an astounding 1,067 defensive snaps, which accounted for 98% of the team’s defensive plays. He also contributed 162 special teams snaps, or 37% of the total.
McKinney has become a key figure in the Packers’ defensive transformation, especially in the safety position. The team made significant changes in the secondary by letting go of players like Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford through free agency, and even cutting Anthony Johnson Jr. and Benny Sapp III. In contrast, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst brought McKinney aboard, drafted Javón Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitán Oladapo, with Zayne Anderson remaining as the lone holdover.
A Bright Future Ahead for McKinney with the Packers
In March, Xavier McKinney signed a four-year, $67 million contract with the Green Bay Packers, keeping him with the team through the 2027 season. His commitment to the Packers is a reflection of the team’s confidence in his abilities and leadership in the secondary. As one of the brightest stars in the Packers’ defense, McKinney’s continued growth will be pivotal to the team’s future success.
Injury Update: Christian Watson’s Setback and More
While McKinney’s injury is a thing of the past, the Packers’ roster is still dealing with some lingering injury concerns. The Packers’ 2024 season ended after their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but General Manager Brian Gutekunst recently clarified that no injuries are expected to carry over into the 2025 season—except for wide receiver Christian Watson’s torn ACL, which will likely take some time to recover from.
Looking Ahead to 2025
The Green Bay Packers are in a rebuilding phase, but with key players like Xavier McKinney signed to long-term deals and showing impressive durability, the future is looking brighter. McKinney’s recovery from a tough injury, along with his exceptional performances, not only shows his personal resolve but also strengthens the Packers’ defense as they look ahead to a promising 2025 season.
