Devin Williams continues to face difficulties on the mound. Last Monday night, just a week after being officially removed from his role as the Yankees’ closer, the reliever took to the field against the San Diego Padres but failed to complete the inning.
The Yankees were ahead 3-0 before Williams entered, but by the end of the inning, they were trailing 4-3. At the time of his entry, Williams had an ERA of 8.18 and a WHIP of 1.82, figures that have now deteriorated further. Initially, the former All-Star seemed to be on the right track, striking out Martin Maldonado.
However, he then issued a walk to Tyler Wade and allowed a base hit to Brandon Lockridge. Despite striking out Fernando Tatis Jr. on four pitches, that was the last out he secured. Following the strikeout of Tatis, Williams walked Luis Arraez on four straight pitches, loading the bases. This prompted Yankees manager Aaron Boone to replace him with closer Luke Weaver.
Unfortunately, Weaver’s performance did not turn the tide. Manny Machado promptly hit a two-run double, followed by a two-run single from Xander Bogaerts, giving the Padres a 4-3 advantage. The Padres maintained this lead for the win. Williams was charged with three of those runs, causing his ERA to balloon to a staggering 10.03.
His WHIP also climbed to 1.97, and opposing batters are now hitting .283 against him. This was the fourth occasion this season where he has conceded three or more runs in a single outing. The Yankees acquired Williams for his proven ability in high-pressure scenarios, but that strategy is currently falling short.
