In a heartwarming story that’s captivating fans far beyond the baseball diamond, MLB pitcher Lucas Giolito has made headlines for reasons that have nothing to do with strikeouts or fastballs — and everything to do with compassion.
During a recent visit to Hope Orphanage in the U.S., Giolito met a quiet 8-year-old boy who had been living there for nearly three years. What happened next left the entire room in tears.
According to orphanage staff, as Lucas knelt to tie the boy’s shoelace, the child softly whispered seven words that would forever change their lives:
“Can you be my brother for real?”
A Life-Changing Moment
Lucas Giolito, known for his composure on the mound, was visibly shaken. Without hesitation, he wrapped the boy in a hug and reportedly said,
“From now on, I’m your brother. For real. For life.”
But it didn’t stop there.
Within hours, Giolito had filed the paperwork to adopt the boy as his legal younger brother, and stunned staff and social workers further by vowing to pay for the boy’s entire education, from elementary school to college — and even beyond.
“He deserves a future he can dream about,” Giolito said, according to witnesses. “So I’m sending him to Future’s Academy after he turns 18. That’s my promise.”
Nannies in Tears
The moment Giolito made that announcement, several nannies and staff reportedly broke down in tears. One longtime caretaker said:
“We’ve seen donors, we’ve seen athletes, but we’ve never seen something like this. He didn’t just give hope — he gave family.”
Teammates and Fans React
The story spread like wildfire across social media. Fellow MLB players and celebrities shared their admiration:
-
Shohei Ohtani: “Respect beyond the game.”
-
Bryce Harper: “Lucas has always been solid. But this? Legendary.”
-
Future, founder of the academy mentioned by Giolito, even responded:
“We’ll save his seat. This kid already has greatness in him.”
Building a Future Together
The boy, whose name is being withheld for privacy, is said to be ecstatic and has already begun calling Giolito “big bro.” The two reportedly play catch every evening and are planning a summer trip to visit MLB stadiums together — starting with the one where Lucas pitches.
When asked why he did it, Giolito smiled and said:
“Because baseball gives me a platform. But this? This gives life meaning.”
