In recent weeks, the Boston Red Sox, much like the Chicago Cubs, have begun facing a spate of injuries. A setback for Major League Baseball’s young talent, Triston Casas will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
Despite this misfortune, the Red Sox cannot afford to remain passive; they must actively seek ways to maintain competitiveness with their current lineup, as they are currently performing above average. In light of Casas’s injury, Keagan Stiefel of NESN suggested that the team consider bringing in former Cubs star Anthony Rizzo, who is currently a free agent.
Stiefel noted, “Rizzo is not the player he once was, yet he played regularly for a team that reached the World Series. However, Boston likely seeks someone who has been active in the past year.” Although Rizzo had a tough season with the New York Yankees, his popularity in MLB endures.
After leading the Cubs to a World Series victory in 2016, he remains a significant figure in the franchise’s history, both for his on-field performance and his contributions off it. Yet, Rizzo’s prime days, marked by a 130-plus OPS+, are behind him, with him recording an 82 OPS+ last season and a 94 the season before. With a .228 batting average, only eight home runs, and occasionally subpar defense, it’s unclear why the Red Sox would pursue him unless they believe he still has potential to offer.
