CLEVELAND (AP) — In a commanding performance, Carlos Rodón threw seven effective innings, Paul Goldschmidt knocked in two runs, and Aaron Judge elevated his league-topping batting average to .415, leading the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, thereby preventing a series sweep.
Rodón (3-3) yielded just four hits, fanned five consecutive batters, and baffled the Guardians’ lineup. Fernando Cruz and Luke Weaver each contributed an inning to seal the five-hit effort. Judge and Goldschmidt each drove in a run against Luis Ortiz (2-3) in the opening inning, securing the Yankees’ win in the final game of the three-match series.
New York has not suffered a series sweep of at least three games in Cleveland since 1970. The Guardians’ five-game winning streak was snapped, dropping their home record to 7-2. Judge, who had a perfect 4-for-4 performance on Tuesday, smashed a triple off the deep center field wall in the first inning, allowing Ben Rice to score from first. The Yankees tacked on another run with Goldschmidt’s RBI double.
Judge has reached base in 21 consecutive games, leading the majors in batting average, hits, and on-base percentage. Rice and Goldschmidt added RBIs in the second inning against Ortiz, who required 76 pitches to navigate the first three frames. Guardians’ rookie Will Wilson secured his first major league hit in the ninth inning.
A pivotal moment occurred when Judge’s 418-foot drive to dead center in the first inning ricocheted off the top of the 19-foot outfield wall. Statcast data revealed that Judge’s sixth career triple would have been a home run in 28 of 30 MLB parks (excluding Arizona and Cleveland). Despite several opportunities to widen the lead, the Yankees left 13 runners on base and struck out 14 times.
Both teams have Thursday off. On Friday, the Yankees will host Toronto with Carlos Carrasco (2-1, 6.53 ERA) making his fifth start of the 2025 season. Cleveland will face Boston at home with Ben Lively (1-2, 3.86 ERA) taking the mound.
