The Boston Red Sox might pull off an unexpected trade to bring back a familiar face who hasn’t been away from the team for long. Although Boston’s current closer situation is stable, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow could still consider adding another late-inning pitcher before the deadline.
Breslow is mindful that Aroldis Chapman is now 37 years old. Securing another closer as a backup for Chapman or as a setup option could be beneficial. What about reacquiring Kenley Jansen? The four-time All-Star departed Boston to ink a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels in February, but he might be on the move again, as suggested by MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger.
“Kenley Jansen is performing excellently,” Amsinger remarked last week on MLB Tonight. “The (Los Angeles) Angels aren’t looking strong right now. They’ve struggled over the past week and a half. Kenley is in excellent form.
For a future Hall of Famer seeking a winning atmosphere, his velocity and spin are impressive. Kenley is likely to be traded.” Aside from one poor performance against the Detroit Tigers, Jansen has been more than competent in 2025, attracting attention from many contenders, including potentially the New York Yankees.
If Breslow has confidence in Justin Slaten’s development as a dependable closer, pursuing Jansen might not be necessary. However, with Jansen’s contract nearing its end, acquiring him or at least discussing terms with the Angels carries minimal risk.
