The Green Bay Packers have been relatively quiet this offseason, with their most notable free agent acquisitions being guard Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs. They also brought in wide receiver Mecole Hardman but haven’t significantly bolstered their receiving corps otherwise.
Although the Packers boast a solid group of receivers, they lack a legitimate No. 1 option. Christian Watson, who tore his ACL in Week 18, is uncertain for the season opener. To inject more energy into their receiving lineup, Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka is scheduled for a pre-draft visit with the Packers.
Egbuka, regarded as one of the top wide receiver prospects in this draft, has piqued Green Bay’s interest. Known for his savvy route running and impressive agility, Egbuka thrives in the slot and boasts 205 receptions for 2,868 yards and 24 touchdowns over his four-year college career. The Packers are keen on strengthening their receiving unit, and Egbuka has caught their eye.
Watson, a second-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, has faced challenges staying healthy, dealing with hamstring issues, and now recovering from an ACL tear. Entering a contract year, Watson is unlikely to be back before the latter half of the season. While Green Bay remains patient with his rehabilitation, they might be considering a future replacement.
The Packers almost dipped into Ohio State’s talent during the 2023 NFL Draft. ESPN’s Matt Miller mentioned that an anonymous scout viewed Green Bay as a “sneaky” contender for Jaxon Smith-Njigba. They ultimately chose Lukas Van Ness with the 13th overall pick, while Smith-Njigba was picked 20th by the Seattle Seahawks.
In two seasons with Seattle, he has amassed 163 receptions, 1,758 yards, and 10 touchdowns. It remains to be seen if Green Bay will pass on a similar opportunity, but it’s clear they admire Egbuka’s potential. Drafting him could signal the end of Watson’s tenure in Green Bay.
