The Boston Red Sox decided not to include Adam Ottavino on their major league roster after he participated in Spring Training with them. During Spring Training, Ottavino pitched in five games, posting a 10.80 ERA and an 8-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio over five innings.
Given these numbers, Boston’s decision to move in another direction wasn’t entirely unexpected. Ottavino had an opt-out clause in his contract, and both parties chose to part ways shortly before the start of the 2025 season. Although the season is still in its early stages, Ottavino has already experienced a whirlwind period.
After leaving Boston, he swiftly secured a contract with the New York Yankees. He appeared twice at the major league level with New York, managing not to concede any runs. Despite this, the Yankees designated him for assignment to make room on their roster for Devil Williams. When a player is designated for assignment, other teams have a week to trade for or claim the player.
If not, the player can be assigned to the minors, or if they have enough experience, they can refuse the assignment. On Sunday, it was announced that Ottavino chose free agency over a minor league assignment, as confirmed by the Yankees.
“Today, RHP Adam Ottavino elected free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment,” the Yankees stated. However, this free agency was short-lived, as he re-signed with New York on Sunday, according to SNY’s Andy Martino. “The Yankees are re-signing Adam Ottavino. Sources indicate he’ll join the team in Detroit,” Martino reported. It’s certainly been a hectic week for him.
