The New York Yankees might contemplate trading Anthony Volpe following his lackluster showing in the Subway Series, and Jake Elman of Yahoo Sports believes that Ozzie Albies from the Atlanta Braves could be a sensible exchange.
Yankees fans have had mixed feelings about Volpe due to his erratic fielding and inconsistent batting. His recent strikeout against the New York Mets sparked discussions among fans and analysts about potential trades for the young shortstop.
Elman supports the idea of acquiring Albies by highlighting the three-time All-Star’s notable track record, despite his own recent struggles. “Albies, a three-time All-Star and lifelong member of the Braves, has a .225 batting average, five home runs, and 17 RBIs over 47 games,” Elman notes.
“The 28-year-old has recorded a 0.2 bWAR and a career-low .616 OPS in 204 plate appearances on a Braves team that is gaining momentum—this could prompt Atlanta to consider a bold trade.” Trading Volpe, who is under team control until 2028, carries significant risk. The Yankees lack dependable depth behind Volpe, and moving starting third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera to shortstop was ruled out recently due to his severe ankle injury.
Despite his shaky infield performance, the 24-year-old shortstop ranks second behind Aaron Judge in bWAR, at 1.5. The Yankees clearly hold Volpe in high regard for both personal and professional reasons. A native New Yorker, Volpe was a lifelong Yankees fan before being drafted by the team in the first round in 2019. He debuted in MLB in 2023 and earned the American League Gold Glove Award for his shortstop play that year.
Elman clarifies that no credible trade discussions are underway for either Albies or Volpe, but such a move would be intriguing and potentially beneficial for all parties involved. Is the Yankees’ honeymoon with Anthony Volpe coming to an end, and if so, is this how it concludes?
