After falling 4-3 to the San Diego Padres on Monday, the New York Yankees revealed they have designated seasoned pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment and have promoted reliever Yerry de los Santos to fill his spot.
With standout reliever Devin Williams still underperforming despite being removed from the closer position, the Yankees decided to part ways with Carrasco and bring in another bullpen option. Carrasco recorded a 2-2 record with a 5.91 ERA over eight starts.
When Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about who might step in as the fifth starter after Carrasco’s departure, his response was unexpected. Boone mentioned left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and right-hander Allan Winans as potential candidates. Initially signed on March 24 to serve as a long reliever or spot starter, Yarbrough may see an expanded role.
In nine appearances for the Yankees, he has achieved a 3.72 ERA, and during his initial start of the season against the Rays on May 3, he pitched four innings, allowing one run, striking out two, and issuing three walks over 64 pitches.
Meanwhile, Winans has yet to make an MLB appearance this year, but he has thrown 14 scoreless innings over four outings, including three starts, with Triple-A Scranton. Although Carrasco’s release could be temporary, it remains a surprising move given the Yankees’ limited rotation options until Luis Gil returns in a month’s time. However, with four rest days scheduled over the next month, the team might be counting on the rotation facing less strain.
