Although the New York Yankees currently lead the American League East with a 14-9 record, some of their position players and starting pitchers are underperforming, potentially hindering their progress. While it’s premature to hit the panic button just 22 games into the season, general manager Brian Cashman is likely keeping a close watch for areas that might need improvement as the season progresses.
Recently, the Yankees have been associated with several pitchers, including Miami’s Sandy Alcantara, San Diego’s Dylan Cease, and Arizona’s Zac Gallen, though some analysts argue that enhancing their offensive lineup should be a priority. Zach Pressnell from Newsweek is among those analysts, suggesting a trade scenario where the Yankees could acquire Minnesota Twins’ star infielder Carlos Correa.
Pressnell noted that “Adding Correa, who himself is off to a slow start, would provide the Yankees with a seasoned player to feature daily.” Correa would primarily play third base for New York but could also cover other infield positions if Jazz Chisholm Jr. or Anthony Volpe need a break or are injured. However, Correa’s hefty contract could be a sticking point, as the Yankees might not want to shoulder the entire burden, necessitating the Twins to cover a portion of the financial commitment if they wish to make the trade happen.
It’s a situation worth monitoring in the coming weeks. The Yankees are quite familiar with Correa, who was part of the Houston Astros teams in 2017 and 2019 that ousted New York in the American League Championship Series. Correa, who secured a six-year, $200 million contract with the Twins in 2023, is also experiencing a slow season start, hitting just .194 with one home run, five RBIs, and seven runs. Yet, he is generally a reliable performer.
The 30-year-old shortstop has hit 20 or more home runs in six of the nine seasons where he played at least 75 games, and has recorded 54 or more RBIs in nine out of his first ten seasons. Integrating Correa into third base would address New York’s significant issue beyond pitching. The Yankees’ current third-base rotation of Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and Pablo Reyes has yielded only two home runs, eight RBIs, 16 runs, and a .264 batting average.
