When Jasson Dominguez moved on from his prospect status, the New York Yankees introduced a new top talent. George Lombard Jr., a 19-year-old infielder, is showing signs of becoming a future star, which has been evident early this season. After reaching High Single-A last year, the Yankees swiftly elevated him to Double-A Somerset after just 24 games this season, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Lombard has produced an impressive .329/.495/.488 slash line, with one home run, 10 extra-base hits, 13 RBIs, and only 22 strikeouts against 23 walks. In his third professional year and second full season, New York is advancing him rapidly through their system.
Selected 26th overall in the first round of the 2023 draft, Lombard hails from a baseball lineage; his father, George Lombard, spent six years in MLB before transitioning to coaching and is currently the bench coach for the Detroit Tigers. While Lombard Jr. has shown promise early in his career, he’s elevated his performance in 2025.
“More confident, stands straighter,” an evaluator told Brendan Kuty of The Athletic (subscription needed). “He seems to have a strategy at the plate. There’s a presence about him—you can tell he was a high pick, and then he demonstrates why.” It appears the Yankees do not plan to bring him to the Majors this year, as he has only played 147 professional games, none beyond the Single-A level.
The next challenge for Lombard will be to test himself against tougher competition, which will determine if he continues on a fast-track promotion or requires more development time. Nonetheless, this is an encouraging sign for New York. Lombard appears to be the genuine article, and if he keeps developing at his current pace, he could become the franchise’s next standout infielder.
