The Boston Red Sox made an excellent decision during the offseason by acquiring All-Star powerhouse Alex Bregman through free agency. This move has already paid off, as Bregman is off to arguably the finest start of his career.
There was much speculation about Bregman’s potential move to Boston, especially concerning how his swing would be ideally suited for Fenway Park and the Green Monster. Evidently, this has proven true, with Bregman posting a slash line of .304/.381/.567, hitting 10 home runs, and driving in 32 RBIs over 43 games.
He has also contributed stellar defense at third base, accumulating 2.4 wins above replacement so far. If not for Aaron Judge’s remarkable season with the New York Yankees, Bregman might be a leading candidate for the American League MVP Award. Nevertheless, Judge’s extraordinary performance, assuming he remains healthy, likely positions him to claim the honor once again.
During the offseason, there was considerable speculation, and Bregman attracted interest from several teams, including the Detroit Tigers. So why did Boston appeal to him? According to a compelling article by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Bregman expressed that he believed Boston offered him a genuine opportunity to succeed.
“The charm of Boston that drew Bregman to the Red Sox—both familial and contemporary—has been realized in every aspect except their record, which, at 22-22, is sufficient for second place in the American League East but would leave Bregman out of the postseason for the first time in a complete major league season,” Passan wrote.
“Boston has ample time to turn things around, which would confirm Bregman’s decision to join them, no matter how long he stays. “I felt it was a place I could win,” Bregman stated. “I believed it was a place where I could demonstrate the level of player I think I am. And I wasn’t afraid to go out and prove it.”
