The Detroit Lions have officially named their offensive play-caller for the 2025 season, and the responsibility falls on newly appointed offensive coordinator John Morton. Speaking with FOX 2, Morton confirmed without hesitation that he will be the one leading Detroit’s offense from the sidelines.
Morton Takes Charge
There had been speculation about whether Morton or head coach Dan Campbell would handle play-calling duties. However, Morton put any doubts to rest, making it clear that he is ready to take on the challenge. Having served as the passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos over the past two years, he now steps into a larger role, shaping Detroit’s offensive strategy.
When directly asked if he would be calling plays for the Lions, Morton responded with a firm, “I am, yes.”
A Meaningful Return to Detroit
For Morton, this role carries personal significance. Discussing his new position, he expressed excitement about returning to his hometown and embracing the opportunity.
“I think it’s an unbelievable opportunity just to get another chance,” Morton shared in an interview, as reported by Lions OnSI. “Calling plays for the Jets was a learning experience, and I’ve grown from that. But being back home, where I grew up, where my family still lives—it means a lot. I understand the culture here. I’ve seen the highs and the lows. I grew up a Barry Sanders fan.”
With strong ties to the city and a clear vision for the offense, Morton is eager to make an impact. “It’s an exciting challenge. Opportunities like this don’t come around often, and I’m ready,” he said.
As Detroit looks to build on their recent success, Morton’s leadership brings stability and familiarity to an already promising offensive unit.
