TJ Watt faces a pivotal moment in his career. Although the star has expressed on several occasions his desire to play until he retires with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team is far from being a Super Bowl contender.
Therefore, with a historic contract extension looming, Watt must decide whether his future will be forever linked to Mike Tomlin or if another franchise will give him the opportunity he’s been seeking to compete for a championship.
Meanwhile, Omar Khan and the Steelers have no way out. If they want to retain the linebacker, they will have to make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. A pivotal moment for both sides.
Will Steelers give TJ Watt a contract extension?
The Steelers will give TJ Watt a contract extension, and according to a report by Gerry Dulac, “there’s a good chance” this will happen before the start of the new league year on March 12.
During the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, the team’s general manager, Omar Khan, already hinted at this possibility, considering that Watt is looking for a deal that would pay him $35 million per year.
“TJ’s one of those legacy guys. I was around Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu. Those guys played their entire career and that’s a special thing. I’m hopeful and confident that TJ will be one of those guys. TJ’s been a big part of this team and I’m confident and hopeful that he’ll be here for a long time.”
