BOSTON — Earlier this month, catcher Connor Wong suffered a broken left pinky. Initially, the Red Sox suggested his recovery would be swift, and now, his return seems imminent.
Wong, who was injured on April 7, is poised to start a minor league rehabilitation stint this weekend, potentially rejoining the main roster on Tuesday in Toronto. “He’s feeling alright. He’ll likely start his rehab on Sunday,” said Alex Cora. “We’re uncertain about how many games he’ll need. I need to discuss it with him, the hitting coaches, and gauge our comfort level.
He’s currently catching Tanner Houck in a bullpen session and has passed that hurdle, so he should be okay. The focus now is on his batting; we need to determine what’s best for him before making a call.” The Red Sox have a day off on Monday before commencing a three-game series in Toronto on Tuesday.
When asked if Wong might return for this series, Cora replied, “There’s a possibility, yes.” While Wong has been out, the Red Sox have primarily relied on Carlos Narvaez, who has a modest batting record (.203/.266/.322) but has been commended for his management of the pitching crew and defensive performance.
Blake Sabol, the current backup, would likely be sent to Worcester upon Wong’s return. Another option for the Red Sox is seasoned catcher Yasmani Grandal, who was signed on a minor league contract and has participated in four games with the WooSox. Grandal’s contract includes an opt-out clause effective May 1, pressing the Red Sox to make a decision on him soon.
