In a deeply emotional revelation, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has shared a heartbreaking update about his 18-year-old daughter, Camila Cora, who has been battling lupus — an incurable autoimmune disease — since her diagnosis in 2021.
During a recent interview, Cora opened up about the private struggle his daughter has faced over the past few years. Camila, known for her intelligence, kindness, and unwavering spirit, has been bedridden for much of the past year as the disease has taken a heavy toll on her health.
“It’s been the toughest fight of our lives,” Cora said, his voice shaking with emotion. “Seeing your child suffer and not being able to fix it — it breaks you. But Camila is a warrior. She fights every single day with courage and grace.”
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the body’s own tissues and organs. The symptoms can vary from joint pain and skin rashes to severe fatigue and life-threatening complications involving the heart, lungs, or kidneys. There is currently no cure, only treatments to manage flare-ups and reduce inflammation.
Cora, known for his fiery passion on the field, spoke with vulnerability about how Camila’s illness has reshaped his life. “Baseball has always been a huge part of who I am, but now, everything takes a backseat to my daughter’s health. She’s the bravest person I know.”
The Red Sox organization, as well as fans around the league, have rallied in support of the Cora family. Camila has received countless messages of encouragement, many from those who admire her strength and her father’s devotion.
“She has good days and bad days,” Cora added. “But no matter what, she smiles. She keeps fighting. That’s who she is.”
The Cora family has chosen to share Camila’s story not only to raise awareness about lupus but also to remind others facing similar battles that they are not alone. As Alex Cora puts it: “This disease doesn’t define her. Her courage does.”
