Are the Boston Red Sox on the verge of implementing a major organizational shift? The team faces a significant challenge at first base with no immediate resolution in sight. Romy González is expected to be a temporary solution, but who will address this gap in the long term?
Options exist in free agency and the trade market, yet an internal candidate might be considered. With Triston Casas sidelined, rumors have surfaced about the potential involvement of designated hitter Rafael Devers. Manager Alex Cora has expressed his thoughts on this possibility, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Cora firmly stated, “From my perspective right now, no.”
He explained that during spring training, they requested Devers to adapt to a new role, which he initially resisted.
However, Devers has since become quite comfortable with his current duties. “I told you guys in spring training, he’s my DH,” Cora reiterated. “It’s not delicate at all,” he added. “We made a decision. We discussed it with him.
He’s a DH.” This stance is understandable. Transitioning Devers from third base to a designated hitter earlier was a significant move, sparking considerable offseason discussion and some negative reactions. Currently excelling in his role, it would be a significant demand to ask him to undergo another major transition now.
