The Boston Red Sox’s relief pitchers have started the 2025 Major League Baseball season on a positive note. Currently, Boston’s bullpen holds the 10th spot in the majors with a 4.10 ERA, though this figure has been affected by a few challenging outings.
It’s still early in the season, and statistics are highly changeable. At this stage, giving up just a couple of earned runs can significantly alter a stat due to the limited sample size. However, there are many promising aspects of the bullpen.
Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson have collectively struck out seven batters over 7 1/3 innings without surrendering an earned run. Garrett Whitlock maintains a 3.38 ERA across eight innings, and Greg Weissert also sports a 3.38 ERA, having participated in six games. Brennan Bernardino has pitched in three games without conceding a run.
Moreover, a significant player is expected to return to the major league roster soon. Up to this point, the Red Sox have been missing three-time All-Star Liam Hendriks, who has been recovering from right elbow inflammation. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Hendriks threw a bullpen session on Monday and might start a rehab assignment as early as this weekend.
Cotillo mentioned, “Lucas Giolito will have a rehab start Wednesday with the WooSox following Tuesday’s postponement. Hendriks had a bullpen session yesterday and is probably set for a rehab assignment by the weekend.” Boston’s bullpen already shows improvement over last year, and now it seems an All-Star could soon join to bolster their efforts.
