The Detroit Lions’ 2024 season ended on Saturday night. The team fell to the Washington Commanders at home, a disappointing end for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Now, the Lions will move on to the offseason and try to improve to make another run next season. The defense in particular needs attention, as the unit had a poor pass rush and was also prone to giving up big plays.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports has the Lions selecting Ohio State edge rusher Jack Sawyer in the 2025 NFL Draft to help the team’s pass rush. Regarding Sawyer’s fit in Detroit, Trapasso offered the following:

“Jack Sawyer has played his best football of the season in the College Football Playoff, and his no-nonsense attitude — along with refined skills — make him an ideal fit in Detroit,” Trapasso wrote.

Sawyer has had his best collegiate season in 2024. The edge rusher has collected 56 tackles, nine tackles for loss, nine sacks, and one interception. The defender is a key leader for a Buckeyes team that is getting ready to play for the National Championship.

Meanwhile, the Lions desperately need help for star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Hutchinson led the team with 7.5 sacks in 2024 despite only playing in five games this season due to injury. No other player on the team had even five sacks on the season.

Za’Darius Smith was second on the team in sacks with four, but the veteran edge rusher will be 33 years old in September. Smith also has a potential out in his contract this offseason, but even if the Lions keep him around, more help is needed.

Making matters worse, Al-Quadin Muhammad and Marcus Davenport are heading for free agency, so the Lions have a depth issue, also.

Sawyer would give the team another young pass rusher to build around opposite Hutchinson. The Ohio State product collected 141 tackles, 23 sacks, 29 tackles for loss, and one interception in his college career.
