Positive developments could be on the horizon for the Boston Red Sox, as Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has not yet secured a contract extension before the 2025 MLB season. As he heads into the final year of his current contract, Guerrero is set to earn $28.5 million this year and will become a free agent in the offseason.
Although extension discussions between Guerrero and the Blue Jays were anticipated to conclude once Spring Training kicked off, ongoing negotiations have been reported, particularly from Guerrero’s agent, with speculation suggesting a potential move to Boston.
After Guerrero revealed in February that Toronto’s offer fell short of his expectations (according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan), new insights suggest a possible $500 million deal is on the horizon. “So far, I don’t have any updates,” the four-time All-Star commented. “I’ve consistently communicated with my agent and left the negotiations to him while I focus on playing. As of now, I am not aware of the details you’re mentioning.”
One might wonder about the implications for the Red Sox. Guerrero has had impressive performances at Fenway Park, boasting a career OPS of 1.054. Furthermore, Jim Bowden from The Athletic recently linked Guerrero to the Boston Red Sox as his potential free agency in 2026 looms. In his March article, Bowden stated that Fenway Park would suit Guerrero well, given his strong performance there (1.054 career OPS), and he could potentially make a significant impact against the Green Monster for many years.
Boston is reportedly a location that might attract him. Nonetheless, Guerrero faces some hurdles, such as Boston’s ownership needing to commit to a 12-year contract ranging from $450 million to $750 million. However, Boston would, overall, be an ideal landing spot for Guerrero. Only time will reveal where the 26-year-old will end up.
