New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger was absent from the lineup in Tuesday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers due to a bout of food poisoning. Yankees manager Aaron Boone reported that the 29-year-old Bellinger fell ill after consuming chicken wings the previous night and experienced nausea throughout the night.
Boone noted that no other team members have shown symptoms, and he expressed hope that Bellinger might recover enough to potentially participate later in the game, according to the New York Post. Bellinger has now missed three of the past five games, having been sidelined for two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of a stiff back.
He made a comeback on Sunday and played in the Yankees’ 6-2 defeat to the Tigers on Monday. Bellinger was acquired from the Chicago Cubs during the offseason to fill the void left by Juan Soto, who joined the New York Mets in free agency.
So far this season, Bellinger has appeared in eight games, maintaining a .233 batting average with one home run and six RBIs while covering various outfield positions. Center fielder Trent Grisham stepped in for Bellinger on Tuesday, enjoying an impressive start to the season with a .423 average, three homers, and nine RBIs over nine games.
Carlos Carrasco was on the mound for the Yankees, while the Tigers had 2024 AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal as their starting pitcher.
